This involves a tiny device being implanted under the skin. It contains etonogestrel, which it gradually and automatically releases into the bloodstream to stop the ovaries from releasing eggs, thereby prevent pregnancy. It is effective for a maximum duration of three years, after which it must be removed and/or replaced. The implant and its subsequent removal is carried out in the doctor’s office with hardly any discomfort.
